Kubuk'18
Lush green canopies
of trees that weave garlands upon the azure skies is indeed a sight to the sore
eyes. Sunbeams that filter through the leaves and the soothing breeze that
blows through the woods are nothing but a blessing. Theodore Roosevelt has once
said, " To exist as a nation, to prosper as a state, to live as people, we
must have trees"
But, to the greatest
misery of us all, the so called " civilized" human beings cut down
thousands of trees, dissolving away the essence of mother earth. Unpredictable
weather changes,Global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, increasing of
natural disasters are inevitable as deforestation has become a virus that runs
across the globe.
In the context of the
Sri Lankan socio-economic and political landscape, deforestation has become one
of the most alarming issues as well. The recent controversy regarding the
destruction of Vilpaththu was an eye opener to the general public to be aware
of the sinister forces that devastate the green treasures that prosper the
island. Although various parties raise their voices and engage in tedious
arguments and discussions about the cutting down of trees, the question still
remains unanswered;
"Has any
remedial action been taken at all?"
So, we, rotaractors of university of Peradeniya, rotary club of Kandy joining hand in hand with the rotary club of Tiripur,West India decided to keep a giant step forward. We aspired to
plant hope by planting trees. The hope for a green world where every breathing
human being and every breathing tree share an unbreakable bond will be planted.
The main objective of
the project kumbuk was to save the environment and water by planting trees. And
for that 250 Kumbuk trees were planted in the hanthana mountain range. Other
than that an organized public relation plan was there to make the public aware
of what we can do to save the world. Also it enriched the fellowship among the
Rotaractors and Rotarians.
