Rotaract Club of University of Peradeniya

  'NOX CAELO' was a project done by the Rotaract club of University of Peradeniya in collaboration with the Foundation of Astronomical Studies and Explorations in order to develop the bond between members and strengthen their enthusiasm on night sky observation. It was held on the 27th of May, 2020 and it is one of the projects selected from the mini project season organized by our club. At the beginning, “NOX CAELO” was planned to be conducted as an outdoor night sky observation camp but unfortunately, due to the pandemic situation of the world, it was limited to an online talk and a discussion on “The wonders of the night sky” . Mr. Tharindu Rajasooriya, B.Sc. Hons. Physics Special (UOP), PhD Reading (Emory University) delivered the guest speech and conducted the discussion session based on the questions arose from the audience. Phase 1 of NextStep’20 was held on 11 th March 2020 at the Seminar Room 1, Faculty of Engineering from 5.30 p.m. onwards. The talk of the day was based on the theme “Meeting Environmental Challenges created by Urbanization through Green Practices”. The resource person of the talk was Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake, Secretary, State Ministry of Urban Development and Senior Professor in Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya. He is also the Chairman of the Green Building Council of Sri Lanka. Although nature is the core of human existence, people are exceeding their limits of consumption and disturbance to nature through the rapid process of modernization and urbanization.    It is important to keep in mind that there will be no future, without nature which will ultimately lead to the loss of all materialistic values embraced by humans.   Another successful leadership training camp was organized by the immediate past Rotaractors of the Rotaract Club of University of Peradeniya, in search of the spirit of the Rotaract Youth. This leadership training was held at Gurudeniya with fun activities, leadership training, games, creative drama and many more. The Pera Rotaract Youth Spirit Best Female Award; Alpha Award was won by Chavindi, a proud member of the Pera Rota Club. ‘Spark’ , a professional development project aimed at developing the social dancing skills of the club members as a life competency was held on the 15th of January 2016. the project was organized    along with the Student Committee of Alliance Française de Kandy. There were 10 dancing practice sessions held prior to the dream night, Spark since November 2015 under the guidance of dance instructors representing both organizing bodies. The practice sessions mainly focused on social dancing styles such as Salsa, Jive and Rock n Roll and the club members and the students of Alliance Françoise de Kandy were trained and guided through these different styles which brought about a novel experience in Rotaract life. Along with the dance sessions, the partner clubs organized a glamorous and dazzling night of dance, music and fun which was the ultimate showcase of the outcome of the dance lessons.
