Change

The Rotaract club of University of Peradeniya successfully completed another community service project on the 23rd of October 2015. Change was aimed at the street children of the Keppetipola Vidyalaya, Kandy. We wanted to highlight the importance of education for such children in order to succeed in life. Thus, the children were brought to the university where we made them engage in different activities to broaden their horizons.

Station Number 1 :  Describing  characters  who succeeded walking through economic and social problems. Ex. Pabilis Silva, The great Chef in Sri Lanka. This will inspire the kids showing that there is always a path to succession.

Station Number 2 : Group activity time! “Paper Cartoon” They were asked to dress up any cartoon character they like using paper. That enhanced their creative abilities and conceptual skills to the maximum. Identify the leadership qualities and decision making  skills.

Station Number 3 :  Individual activity is to make the kids come out and show their talents. We focused here to show them that everybody has an individual role in the society and has individual responsibilities. This will improve leadership qualities and each student  grabbed individual attention from us.

We performed a drama which described how influential the education to solve economic and sociocultural problems. A tea break and lunch was provided in between the sessions and finally they were given stationary for their achievements. We donated some stationery to the school as well. When we were saying good bye to them a Grade 11 student commented that ‘When we come here, on that day; we will not be able to see you in the University”. This quote is more than enough to say how successful the project was.

Hats off to the Project Chairperson(s) Chavindi Weerawansha, Thiraj Dhanushan, Gamika Surangeeth on a job well done.
